There are a lot of people who promise that you could ‘make money fast’ from Internet advertising. Is that really true? Sadly, for most people the answer to that question is an emphatic no.

Internet advertising may seem like a great way to make money, but the fact is that competition in this niche is fierce. The days of advertisers paying top dollar to get their brand names to appear in front of thousands of people online are long gone. Now, brand owners understand that the number of eyeballs that you can get your logo in front of is not as important as the number of people that actually engage with your brand – traffic, by itself, is worth very little.

That doesn’t mean that it’s not possible to make money from advertising. There are some companies that do quite well from online ads. However, they tend to be ones that have a strong reputation themselves as an authority in their chosen niche. The ones that are respected and that people turn to for advice when it comes to buying products or services. If that’s not what you do, or if you are a relatively small brand that gets traffic only from local users, then you won’t do well from that sort of thing.

So, how can you make money from advertising online? Well, the first thing you need to do is build up a good following of readers, and fill your website with high quality content. This will help you to get the kind of traffic that you need – traffic that converts. Get people to subscribe to your RSS feed, or join your mailing list. Build up followers on your Twitter page or your Facebook page, and post content to your site and your social media profiles on a regular basis. Keep on promoting and promoting, but only sharing informative, engaging and high quality content.

Once you have a bunch of people reading your content that genuinely do respect your views, you can start to sell things. Limit yourself to one promotional post per 12-15 informative or engagin posts on Social media, and one in four on your website or blog, so that you don’t drive away your readers. If you’re going to put ads on your site, make sure that they aren’t too intrusive.

Be patient. Not all of your users will convert right away. In fact, some of them won’t convert at all – but if they respect you and they share information that you post with their friends, followers and family then that’s still a win for you. There’s a good chance that the people who find your brand through those readers will follow your CPA links, and become valuable ‘customers’ of your affiliate links.

You can make a small amount of money through CPM advertising. With this, you are paid per 1,000 impressions. Note that CPM advertisements work better for blogs than they do for forums, because they tend to only count around 12 impressions per IP address as being ‘paid’, and forum users generate dozens if not hundreds of page views per day, so you lose a lt of bandwidth to them.

For forums, Google Adsense could be the best bet – but then you’re only going to make money from people who click on the ads, and there’s a good chance that some readers are using adblock. You could ban people that you suspect are using adblock – it is possible to detect those users – but that’s hardly ideal and it could alienate a lot of visitors.

As you can see, there are a lot of different options for making money online using advertising, and a lot of challenges too. Be patient, think carefully about what sort of ads you run, and be honest with your visitors. People can tel whether you’re promoting something you believe in, or promoting something that you only care about because it has a high eCPM, and if you get a reputation as being the type of webmaster that only chases advertising dollars, you will alienate a lot of people in the long term, and that will harm your bottom line.
